TURMERIC – The Golden Super Hero!

Chances are, you’re no stranger to turmeric. But did you know this vibrant, uniquely flavoured spice is also ultra affordable?

That very same turmeric you add to your weekly curry is actually my favourite SUPERHERO. And it’s been living right there in the spice rack all of this time!

Let’s be clear from the start, turmeric isn’t a fad or a new-age hipster trend – it’s TRUTH. Much more than meets the eye, turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin – which is where the health boosting magic and superpowers lurk.

Having spent a whole lot of hard-earned money on health foods in the past, I’m happy to report that turmeric is likely to be the most budget friendly super-food of them all – and one that I’m welcoming with open arms into our family diet, after all we all want to feel and be as healthy as possible!

Like all families with kids, we’re a busy bunch. A mum to three, I’ve got an active 12-year-old and two kids studying hard in senior high school and university so I want to feed them good, wholesome foods to fuel their brains as well as their bodies.

As head family chef (let’s be honest, the ONLY family chef), we already eat a reasonable amount of fresh foods, we love our fruit and vegetables and almost always bake from scratch – but like always, there’s room for improvement. Admittedly, though I know we can be healthier in the way we eat, I also (not surprisingly) want any changes to be EASY. I don’t want to have to shop for obscure ingredients or blow out the family budget to have a healthier diet – hence why I love the idea of adding turmeric into more of our meals and sipping on a turmeric latte!

The Woolworths Select Ground Turmeric price point is surprisingly loose change friendly – well under $2. If you fancy yourself a barista, you’ll find an ultra convenient Macro Turmeric Latte ($6 per pack of 33 servings) amongst the awesome Woolworths Macro range  – just mix and drink, it’s that easy (and if you like frothy milk, use a small whisk to stir!)

Easy ways to add turmeric to your diet

Extra curries aside, upping your turmeric intake is easy (add the ground spice to your smoothies, bliss balls, sprinkle it on your granola) and your health could benefit.

Here’s some super easy and delicious ways to get more turmeric into your diet:

  • Add just a pinch of the ground spice to your rice, scrambled eggs, roasted vegetables. Turmeric turns everything it touches a vibrant gold colour and often the taste goes relatively undetected. Too easy!
  • Add a ¼ teaspoon of turmeric to your smoothie bowl. Blitz it with a handful of spinach, frozen banana, ginger, lime zest, vanilla protein powder and yoghurt. Delicious!
  • Add it to your bliss ball mix for a gorgeous golden hue.
  • Drink it. A turmeric latte is a soothing, caffeine free hot drink option, perfect for any time of the day. Alternatively, pour it over ice for a refreshing milk drink.

Woolworths Macro turmeric latte

With turmeric appearing on more cafe blackboards than you can shake a sugar sachet at, it’s easy to understand why everyone is keen to sip golden milk and reap the healthy reward. Saving time AND money, Woolworths make it easier than ever to skip the cafe queue and enjoy a turmeric latte at home, in my favourite mug no less. There’s no need to take my slippers off, do my hair or even leave the house. Just sit back, relax and enjoy my golden coloured cuppa knowing it’s doing WONDERS for my health!

It’s important to me that my family has a balanced, nutritious and healthy diet with plenty of whole foods (plant foods which are processed and refined as little as possible) to maintain good health and the active, growing bodies of my kids. I love that Woolworths has made it really easy for me to make those simple, healthier swaps for whole foods over less-refined alternatives with their impressive (and budget friendly) Macro range – I just look for the green Macro label when doing my grocery shopping!

yES, BUT MUCH OF THE LOWER PRICED, STORE-BOUGHT TURMERIC contains very small amounts of curcumin which is not very bioavailable. so healthy benefits of supermarket turmeric are pretty limited – look wider if you really want the benefits.

Adding black pepper can APPARENTLY increase your body’s access to turmeric so that may help get SOMETHING from THE supermarket versions.
