When to Splurge for Organic Produce

Buying organic, especially for a whole family can be expensive. Here’s the low-down on when organic matters the most, and what produce you can save your pennies on.

Organic food is food classified as not grown with pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. The main health hazard of non-organic produce is its exposure to pesticides, as well as some organic varieties of some foods containing a higher nutritional content than non-organic.

Apples?

Yes. Apples absorb more pesticide residue than any other crop, so if there’s a time to buy organic, it would be with apples. Since with apples we often eat the peels, it is important that we don’t ingest too much pesticide residue – we need the fiber and nutrients that the peel provides!

Avocados?

No. Pesticides often will not penetrate the thick outer skin of the avocado, and since we don’t eat that part, we’re in the clear!

Strawberries?

Yes. Organic strawberries often contain more antioxidants, fibre, and vitamin C. So where you can, spring for the organic variety.

Broccoli?

No. Growing broccoli doesn’t require as many pesticides as some other crop do, as pests are not as attracted to it in the growing process.

Grapes?

Yes. Go organic with these bite sized fruits, as they have a high pesticide count.

Sweet potatoes?

No. Don’t bother with these sweet veggies, they don’t hold as much pesticide residue and their skin is save to eat non-organic.Both organic and non-organic varieties will be loaded with beta-carotene, fibre, and vitamin A.
